Javier Bernardino, conocido como Berny, es bailarín de swing y , para nuestra suerte, es experto autor de ilustraciones y animaciones.
Su cartel ilustra nuestro Madrid Swing Exchange y sus personajes nos acompañarán durante todos los meses de preparación; de su creador queremos saber más, como profesional y como bailarín .
Berny es madrileño y lleva dedicado profesionalmente al mundo de la ilustración desde 2005.
Lo tuvo muy claro desde pequeño: quería dedicarse a dibujar. No tiene consciencia de cuando empezó, probablemente desde que pudo coger un lápiz, siendo un niño ya quería ser dibujante de comics. Le apasionan el cartoon y el comic europeo; a la hora de dibujar, lo que le inspira es contar una buena historia.
Es profesor en la escuela de arte ESDIP, la misma donde estudió. En el sector del videojuego ha diseñado personajes, fondos y ha hecho animaciones 2D. Fue director de la popular serie de animación SuperZoo y también ha ilustrado cuentos infantiles. Dibuja temas de baile por encargo, pero también como aficionado al baile ha dibujado a amigos y a alguna bailarina de la escena madrileña… os dejo con la intriga sobre las identidades, eso os lo contaré en otra ocasión (je je). Confiesa que empezó a bailar swing porque quería aprender rock and roll y le dijeron que el lindy hop estaba muy cercano, así que comenzó a bailar y ¡se enganchó¡ compaginando, desde entonces, dibujo, baile y skateboard.
MAD for Swing le invitamos en 2020 a crear un cartel para nuestro Madrid Swing Exchange que tuviera como motivo «los felices años 20″ y no lo dudó; llevaba años comprometido con el mundillo del swing y le apetecía colaborar aportando su trabajo. Los motivos del cartel del Madrid Swing Exchange tienen como marco de fondo la arquitectura del Madrid de los años 20, podemos ver en construcción el edificio de Telefónica, el primer rascacielos de Madrid. En el cartel también podemos ver músicos y bailarines de swing de la época y la famosas rimas del It don´t mean a thing en el abanico del primer plano. En 2020 todos recordamos que no pudimos hacer Exchange ni muchas otras cosas, pero la ilusión, las ganas y el cartel, ahí seguían, así que, en 2025 ese cartel con historia, vuelve a Madrid Swing Exchange.
Para Berny, Madrid Swing Exchange significa muchas cosas, pero si tiene que elegir 3 palabras son estas: Diversión, Baile y Amistad
Anima a la comunidad swing del «mundo mundial» a venir a nuestro Madrid a conocer una ciudad viva donde pasarán unos días fantásticos disfrutando del baile, la música, las tapitas madrileñas y el buen rollo de esta comunidad swing.
Javier Bernardino, better known as Berny,is a swing dancer and (luckily for us) expert in illustration and animation.
His poster for the Madrid Swing Exchange and its characters are part and parcel of our preparations to host the event. So we wanted to know more about the man who designed it, both as a professional and as a dancer.
Berny is a Madrileño who has been working professionally in illustration since 2005.
He knew what he wanted to do from an early age. He can’t remember exactly when it began, because it was probably when someone first put a pencil in his baby fingers. But as soon as he found out about comics, he started drawing his own cartoons. And his career just followed on from that. As he says, the main thing is getting inspired to tell a visual story.
He teaches at the ESDIP,art school, where he first studied. He has designed characters and sets for videogames and 2D animation. Children and adults have enjoyed the anime series, SuperZoo that he directed, as well as his children’s book illustrations. He takes commissions for dance-related design and, for his friends, has produced some great drawings of dancers on the Madrid Swing scene… (He won’t tell us exactly who, but perhaps we’ll spot them at the Exchange). A keen skateboarder, he confesses he began dancing Lindy Hop because he wanted to dance Rock ‘n Roll and it seemed the closest he could get. But then he got the bug and hasn’t stopped grooving since…
In 2020, MAD for Swing asked him to design a poster for our Madrid Swing Exchange with a tagline «The Roaring Twenties». He went for it, delighted to contribute to the swing scene he so enjoyed. His Madrid Swing Exchange poster showed emblematic Madrid architecture from the last lot of Twenties, such as the Telefónica building, the first (but not yet fully built) skyscraper in Madrid at the time. It also shows the swing musicians and dancers of the Roaring Twenties, and the famous phrase (in English) It don´t mean a thing (‘cos no-one can say Madrid ain’t got that swing). We all remember how in 2020 the Exchange and much else was wiped off our agendas. But the poster was there, to remind us how much we looked forward to it. So now, in 2025, it stands for something we CAN do. And WILL do.
For Berny, the Madrid Swing Exchange means many things. But when pushed to give us 3 words, he summed it up in a nutshell: Fun, Dance and Friends.
He wants dancers from «el mundo mundial» (all over the world) to come to Madrid and see what fun it is to dance here, to make friends and delight in Madrileñan music and tapas and the amazing atmosphere built up around the swing scene.
